2023年12月5日,等离子体所三室客座教授剑桥大学Timothy Coombs教授来访。
Timothy Coombs教授本科、硕士、博士均毕业于英国剑桥大学,目前为剑桥大学工程系教授,其研究方向为应用超导与电磁模拟。
12月5日下午,Timothy Coombs教授做主题为“Engineering applications of superconductivity”,三室职工与学生参与了本次讲座,并与Timothy Coombs教授进行了相关讨论。
讲座简介:
High temperature superconductors can be formed into wires, tapes, cables or grown as bulks so support a large range of electrical applications. They support currents and magnetic fields an order of magnitude higher than those available from conventional materials which gives them enormous potential.
This talk will concentrate on the areas where conventional materials cannot meet the necessary criteria. Hence there are emerging use cases for superconductors. E.g. wind turbines where conventional materials can be replaced to improve power/weight ratios; Tokamak’s where we are still unable to produce a sustainable positive power output; New and improved MRI which do not need helium. We will also look at the developments in the conductors themselves and the manufacturing processes, together with new geometries.
We have identified that the primary barriers to deployment are cost and AC loss. We will present a roadmap to ascertain when/whether these barriers can be overcome.
